Austin's Best Food Truck?

Just two years after being launched, The Peached Tortilla founder and former litigator Eric Silverstein’s Southern-Asian fusion fare garnered him and his catering director Mark Tamiso Eater’s 2011 Austin Food Truck of the Year 2011, and with shout-outs to their brisket and mini crabcake mini sandwiches, a spot on Food & Wine’s 2012 list of the best sliders in America 2012. There’s a fairly long menu of tacos and burritos among other options including riffs on banh mi, Chinese barbecue, and pad thai. And to think, the first aha moment came to Silverstein when one of the partners in his former law firm recounted to him how he was telling his son not to go to law school. "If a partner is telling his son to go into a different field," Silverstein recalled thinking to Austinist, "am I going to enjoy this line of work 10 years from now?" Moral of the story? 5 Can't-Miss Bites from Austin Food Trucks

As The Great Food Truck Race has shown us, food trucks now roam the streets in small towns and big cities across the country. Austin was at the forefront of this trend — some of the best food in town, from barbecue to tacos to doughnuts, can be found at food trailers parked around the city. Top Austin chefs like James Beard award-winner Paul Qui operate trailers, so you don’t have to shell out much cash to sample their acclaimed fare.

For Austin’s massive South by Southwest festival and conference, Chef Qui curated a group of trucks to set up shop near the Convention Center in a trailer park of sorts called SouthBites. We took advantage of every opportunity to grab a bite at this outdoor food hall, and here are five of our favorite dishes. You don’t need a festival badge to try them — SouthBites is open to all, and the trucks are parked in different areas of the city year-round.

Tacos and Sliders from The Peached Tortilla: Go for the slider/taco combo with brisket (slider) and Chinese BBQ pork belly (taco).

Fried Brussels Sprout Salad from East Side King: Chef Qui’s super-popular trailers serve up Asian street food, Austin-style, like beet home fries and this bright, crispy salad.

Honey Moon Spirit Lounge

I love this new bar that just opened in Central Austin – it’s a VIBE.

Honey Moon Spirit Lounge, a neighborhood restaurant and cocktail lounge serving a menu of elevated comfort food and modern American share plates, craft cocktails, diverse wines, and craft beers, opens today, April 20 at 4 pm. The new concept, located just south of the Hyde Park neighborhood at 624 W 34th St., is a labor of love from Austinite couple and co-owners Reed Calhoun and Adrienne Wiggins.

Honey Moon Spirit Lounge serves playful, creative dishes by Executive Chef Manuel Rocha (previously of Hopfields, Academia, and Bonhomie). The menu features plates like Koji-Aged Steak Frites Smoked Birria Terrine Duck Fat Fried Seoul Hot Chicken Vegan Barbecue Burnt Ends Chicken Confit Pimento Cheese Chicken Liver Mousse East Coast Oysters King Crab Tarts and a Chef’s Selection Cheese Plate. The Sweets section features a Bourbon Applejack Hand Pie Guanaja Dark Chocolate Tart and Toasted Marshmallow, Coconut and Chocolate Ganache. All proteins are sourced from local and independent Texas farms, as well as most produce on the menu.

Honey Moon Spirit Lounge evokes an ethereal, dreamy atmosphere the french antique-inspired interior is designed to invoke a feeling of whimsical escapism through jewel tones and dramatic lighting, studded with thoughtfully curated antiques throughout the space. The antiques were carefully collected by Wiggins and Calhoun from all over central Texas, sourced from Round Top, La Grange, and New Braunfels. The space also features a spacious front and back, dog-friendly patio with antique chandeliers throughout the patio and interior.

The bar at Honey Moon Spirit Lounge features a stunning, early 20th century-inspired bar designed by Reed Calhoun and built by Mike Sellman (Chop), with the goal of inviting guests to stay, imbibe, and grab dinner and cocktails. The beverage program is spear-headed by bar manager Mallory Valentine, a 20 year industry vet, previously of Loca d’Oro and Bonhomie. The wine program is led by Certified Sommelier Gretchen Van Eck, previously of Olamaie and Gardner. The overall bar program is a nod to classic bar menus emphasizing fresh juices and bespoke ingredients, including an extensive and diverse wine list featuring varietals from around the world. A selection of beers and ciders, and a tap of local craft brews will also be featured. Cocktails include:

Food Even Non-Foodies Adore

We hired The Peached Tortilla to cater our wedding, and would do it again in a heartbeat!

When we originally booked with them (pre-pandemic) we expressed that we would have about 100 guests. When our final numbers came back at under 40, we were prepared to battle. Fortunately, we didn't have to. Lora Null (our catering lead) worked with us to adjust our food minimum and helped us choose a bar package that suited our needs!

Regarding the food itself, superb! Both foodies and non-foodies alike complemented us on our food choices! I am still dreaming about the stuffed avocado and mac and cheese! We even got some of our locals hooked on the food that they are going to try it themselves! Truly, amazing food!

We had a variety of dietary needs within our group (vegetarian, latex, nut allergies, citrus allergies) and Lora and her team worked to ensure they knew who had what allergy- and ensured the safety of our guests. Directly after our ceremony, Lora ensured that my husband and I had whatever drink we wanted, even if it was just water. The staff at The Peached Tortilla were amazing regarding service. We had food stations, but the servers ensured that my husband and I were served first, and didn't have to get into line. They asked us if we wanted any seconds, and continuously checked on our well-being food wise.

It was truly a magical day, and the food truly surpassed even my expectations, and I knew it would be good. Would give them 10 stars if I could!

The Best Food Ever

I am not exaggerating when I say this, this was the best food ever! Everyone at our wedding told us this is by far the best food they have ever had at a wedding and it is not even close. We had hangar steaks, wasabi mashed potatoes, onion jam Brussel sprouts and an incredible salad. and even our vegan friends LOVED their dishes (being a carnivore, I'm not sure exactly what they had, but the all loved it :) ) If you want to blow away your loved ones with AMAZING food at your wedding, do not waste your time, just book this vendor now!! Also, my wife loves nice serving plates and she LOVED all of the dishes The Peached Tortilla brought. Their staff was all very prompt and extremely professional and friendly too. BOOOOK THEM, you will not regret it!!

Best food at a wedding, hands down!

BEST. WEDDING. FOOD. EVER.

We would agree with this statement, but that is what 99% of all guests came and told us at the end of the night. We chose to have the food truck for cocktail hour appetizers and our late-night snack and it was such a fun touch for guests and for pictures! We served mini brisket grilled cheese sandwiches, sweet potato avocado chip, spring salad, blueberry glazed pork tenderloin, ginger salmon, wasabi mashed potatoes, and bacon jam Brussel sprouts. For our late-night snack, we served a honey-buttered chicken bun that gives What-a-burger a run for it's money! My mouth is watering just thinking about our food! We also chose to do the "family style" service and that was a big hit! We loved that everyone got their food at the same time. There service was also top notch. I corresponded with Louise during the planning process and she is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. All-in-all, I can't imagine our wedding being the same without Peached Tortilla! Thank you!

Austin's Best/Most Unique Catering Option

I worked with Louise Jewell to organize our wedding day services. She was incredibly responsive and always willing to answer my questions/explain how everything worked, no matter how small. If you're looking for a menu that will WOW your guests and give them a glimpse into the amazing food scene that exists in Austin, Peached Tortilla will exceed all your expectations! The tasting was AMAZING and we seriously counted down the months until we could have the meal again. We ordered the chicken curry tostadas, bulgogi meatballs and chips/queso/guac served through the food truck for our cocktail hour. Everyone loved the food truck experience! For dinner, we had a fuji apple salad to start and for our entree we had the beef short ribs (WOW) and the honey miso chicken alongside the southwest mac and cheese, bacon jam brussel sprouts and potatoes. Our guests LOVED everything and couldn't stop talking about the food, even days later! I've worked with multiple catering companies in Austin and PT's staff is by far the most professional and efficient I've ever worked with. Obviously the pandemic affected many things when it came to how things would be rolled out day of. Ross was the lead for our wedding day and he was a dream to work with, he made sure that everything ran smooth and our guests and his staff felt safe while food was served. Their bar staff was top notch and made our signature cocktails exactly how we wanted them. Overall, they were a dream to work with. I couldn't recommend them more!

Fantastic Catering Company!!

From outstanding customer service to delicious cuisine, Peached Tortilla is by far the best catering company. They are professional, kind and efficient. My husband and I hired them for our wedding, and recommend you do the same! Our guests and family members couldn't stop raving about how amazing the food was. We are all really big foodies so having a good meal for our big day was extremely important. I highly recommend their fried artichoke appetizer, salmon, and mac n cheese!! Thank you Peached crew for being a part of our special day and providing a meal we'll never forget!!

Tpt amazing!

We could not have been more pleased with The Peached Tortilla! The food was excellent (we chose a vegan menu), and the staff was extremely helpful both before and during the wedding. If I had a question, I could ask any of the waitstaff, and they pointed me in the right direction. We got rave reviews from our guests as well. Roslyn helped us with all the details and she was AMAZING . Thank you TPT!

Amazing food, excellent customer service!

As a wedding planner, I knew that planning my own wedding was going to be stressful. I've seen so many weddings and tasted A LOT of food from caterers around Austin, so choosing my vendors was a big deal. I originally decided to go with something different since I have been to so many weddings. I had planned to go with our favorite BBQ place and keep things really casual. Well, like a lot of couples, our wedding was impacted by Covid-19 and I became a "Covid Bride" and things got complicated. Long story short, 4 weeks before our wedding we were without a caterer. In a panic, I reached out to one of the most reliable caterers I could think of, The Peached Tortilla. Within a few days we had a full proposal and scheduled our tasting for the following week. Because of Coronavirus we couldn't do a normal tasting and instead had to get it To Go and do it at home. Everything was packaged up beautifully, we had an awesome full menu printed with room to write notes, and the chef took a video of herself explaining everything we were tasting! It was one of the best tastings I've ever experienced. I don't feel like we missed out on anything even though we were just doing it at home. We made a few adjustments and Louise helped us out with everything. She was absolutely fantastic! Cut to the wedding day and everything was executed flawlessly. We had their food truck (which is so cute by the way) and was the perfect option for food service, especially given the safety measures that are needed to be taken right now. Our guests couldn't stop talking about how good the food was! Days later we still had people telling us how impressed they were with the food. It was so seamless, that I barely saw the staff. I was just in my own little bubble of happiness and so grateful that I wasn't stressing about the timeline or details of the day. I truly can't recommend The Peached Tortilla enough! If great food, service and communication matter to you at all, you have to book them! You won't be disappointed.

The best and just absolutely delicious.

The food was a HUGE part of our wedding day since we absolutely love food (lol) and Peached Tortilla was the best decision we could have made. We wanted to steer clear of typical, and they executed everything perfectly. From tuna shooters, to pork belly bites, to spicy chicken tacos, everything was insanely good. People have not stopped talking about it. The service was also classy, fun and just outstanding. I know so much hard work goes into this type of service and our appreciation for what they created and delivered on our wedding day is beyond words. Thank you Peached for bringing joy to our day. It was a dream.

Peached Tortilla is the BEST investment for your wedding day!

The Peached Tortilla is handsDOWN the best investment we made in our wedding! We thought it was important to share one of our favorite restaurants with our favorite people. Not only was the food incredible - we received so many compliments - but the service was beyond! They took care of kids meals so kids were ready to go and didn't have to go through the buffet - big win for parents! They did full service set up and tear down and even helped our wedding coordinator load up our car with our leftover alcohol! They made sure we (the bride and groom) were fed and always had a drink in hand!

We loved working with Roslyn, our event coordinator, and appreciated her responsiveness. When planning a wedding we thought the best thing to do was invest in things that were a positive experience for our guests and limited our stress. Having Peached Tortilla for the food, linens, bar service, etc was a no brainer! On top of that they were transparent about their fees! No last minute cake-cutting costs! The only thing to add on is the gratuity for the service staff so we chose to write a check and have our coordinator hand that out after the reception.

Bottomline - choose Peached Tortilla! We are so glad we invested in them!

For details on what we chose for our food: Wasabi mashed potatoes are HEAVEN, the bacon jam brussels were a hit, bahn mi sliders were amazing. for appetizers we got a lot of compliments on the shrimp and grits and hawaiin pork belly bites. And our signature cocktails were a huge hit as well!

INVEST IN PEACHED TORTILLA AND YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

ATX Cocina

The margarita de la casa at ATX Cocina is made with Lunazul Blanco, agave, and lime. My personal favorite it the off-menu half watermelon cocktail for four people. I love the Mexican cuisine at this restaurant!

10 Food Trucks You Need To Visit In Austin, TX

Austin has once again been taken over by South by Southwest. To the casual observer, it may appear that this is merely a music festival however, look closer -- with your stomach eyes --and you will realize that this is also an opportunity to showcase the city's diverse, experimental and delicious cuisine. Present year round, Austin's food trucks are the perfect way to sample a smorgasbord of treats and feed the thousands of concert goers. Below is a list of Austin's finest and the dishes you need to try:

Why: Texans love their brisket -- the definitive meat for Texas BBQ. Micklethewait's brisket is tender, juicy and has just the right amount of seasoned crust. Do yourself a favor and go. to. here. Bonus, in its normal location on Rosewood Ave., Micklethewait is only five minutes away from another popular Austin BBQ spot notorious for its hours-long wait times.

Must-order Item: The Frito Pie is the must order item at Mickelthewait. A heartier version of the classic frito, chili and cheese dish, Mickelthewait tops their pie with two large lamb-chorizo sausages. This dish more than any other was a conversation starter among other hungry Southbyers.

(During SXSW, the truck is located at the SouthBites food trailer park at 604 Driskill St)

Why: You can't have completed a food truck tour of Austin without a visit to the East Side King truck. East Side King is the creation of chefs Paul Qui (winner of Top Chef Season 9) and Moto Utsunomiya. The chefs are inspired by "Asian cultures, rock bands and Austin's laid-back, experimental and fun-loving vibe." The trucks are covered in the artwork of Peelander Yellow and embody Austin's creative, colorful and free spirit.

Must-order Item: The beet home fries at Eastside King are insane. The beets are first roasted which gives them a slightly sweet flavor and soft texture. They are then fried to get the crispy outer crust and served with a tangy mayo. Sweet beets and creamy mayo, is there really more that needs to be said?

(During SXSW, there are several trucks across the city as well as the location at the SouthBites food trailer park at 604 Driskill St)

A post shared by JLam (@lamj) on Feb 22, 2014 at 8:56pm PST

Why: This relative newcomer to Austin's food truck scene definitely delivers on the sweet treats. Also, the truck is one of several businesses in Austin that accept Bitcoin as a form of payment.

Must-order Item: You must get the cinnamon sugar mini donuts in a big bag. The donuts also come in small bags, but please just get the big bag and save yourself the second trip to the truck. Actually, you might make a second. or third trip even with the large bags because these bite-sized donuts are the most perfect light, crispy pillows of deliciousness that melt in your mouth. They are reminiscent of funnel cake and I want them always.

Making fresh tacos until 3am at 6th and Waller! #SXSW pic.twitter.com/BPwyo8kzH7

&mdash Veracruz All Natural (@veracruztacos) March 14, 2014

Why: In Texas, we eat tacos all day -- breakfast, lunch and dinner. For those of you that do not understand the concept of breakfast tacos (which are different than breakfast burritos), do yourselves a favor and get educated at Veracruz All Natural.

Must-order Item: The homemade tortillas, hot sauce and fillings of potatoes, egg, cheese, beans and bacon make these the best breakfast tacos in town.

Why: Chi'lantro does the fusion cuisine that permeates Austin's food truck scene right. The Korean-Mexican hybrid is just what you want for late-night snacking and combines two of the most perfect foods -- tacos and kimchi.

Must-order Item: The kimchi fries are smothered in cheese, sriracha and a creamy "magic" sauce. They are then topped off with -- pay attention -- caramelized kimchi and Korean BBQ. This sweet, tangy, savory and spicy dish is one of my favorite food experiences.

(During SXSW, there are several trucks across the city as well as the location at the SouthBites food trailer park at 604 Driskill St)

Why: Hey Cupcake! was one of the first (now ubiquitous) silver airstream food trailers in Austin. As the name would suggest, they serve large, richly wonderful cupcakes. Bonus, if you just HAVE to have cupcakes and cannot make the trip to the truck. they will deliver the goodness to you.

Must-order Item: For those of you with a sweet tooth, the red velvet cupcake is to die for, with its moist, soft cake and sweet cream cheese frosting.

(The original location is on 1511 S. Congress)

Why: The Peached Tortilla combines Southern and Asian flavors to perfection. The truck is so popular that The Peached Tortilla will open a brick and mortar location in Fall 2014.

Must-order Item: The BBQ Brisket Burrito is stuffed with dry rubbed brisket, cilantro lime rice, creamy slaw and a smoky roasted peach BBQ sauce. And as if this burrito couldn't be any more perfect, it also includes everyone's favorite--a fried egg. If you are in search of a hearty meal, eat this.

(During SXSW, the truck is located at the SouthBites food trailer park at 604 Driskill St)

Why: Hey! You Gonna Eat or What? is the official winner of the 2013 Truck by Truckwest Taste-Off. This food truck serves up large sandwiches and lots of 'tude. To the unaccustomed, the snarky chefs can be abrasive at first but that's just part of the experience. They always ensure to come out and make sure you are enjoying your food and that you leave well fed and happy.

Must-order Item: The Shiner Bock Monte Cristo is THE sandwich to order and the reason behind the truck's 2013 win. This humongous sandwich is stacked with cheddar, provolone, mesquite-smoked turkey and pit-smoked ham and then fried in batter made from Texas' finest brew Shiner Bock. Topped off with a dusting of powder sugar and a side of cherry-fig jam, this sandwich will leave you stuffed. Power through your food coma by walking along South Congress and take the opportunity to visit Austin's weird and wonderful boutiques.

(1318 South Congress but they will move locations shortly to Zilker Park)

Why: Gourdough's specializes in some big, fat donuts. These donuts are not for the faint of heart. At their pub location, they serve donut burgers, which will fill the donut-burger sized hole in your heart. It literally completes you.

Must-order Item: The Flying Pig donut is topped with bacon strips and covered in a maple glaze. In one bite, you will get all the breakfast flavors you need. Mmmm, donuts.

(During SXSW, there are several trucks across the city as well as the location at the SouthBites food trailer park at 604 Driskill St)

Why: Torchy's Tacos has damn good tacos, enough said. Austinites take their tacos seriously and everyone has their favorites, but my loyalties lie firmly with Torchy's.

Must-order Item: You cannot go wrong with any of Torchy's offerings, but do try the Trailer Park taco. This taco is filled with fried chicken, green chiles, pico de gallo, cheese and poblano sauce. Order it trashy and they will replace the lettuce with their queso. That's right, they will cover your taco in queso. For the vegetarians, the Fried Avocado taco is your go-to. Be sure to order a side of their queso as well. This cheesy, gooey wonderfulness was recently voted best queso by Austinites.

(1311 S. 1st as well as several brick and mortar locations across the city)

Whether you're in town for SXSW or planning a visit, you have not experienced Austin until you have done so through a tour of food trucks. Get out there, get weird and eat some dang tacos -- preferably, all day.
